Netanyahu: Can’t Support End of Hamas While Pressing Israel to End War

Ceasefire calls are incompatible with supporting the removal of Hamas in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the weekly Cabinet meeting.

“In the last two days, I spoke with [German] Chancellor Scholz, with French President Macron, and with other leaders, and I told them that it is impossible to support the elimination of Hamas with one hand and pressure us to end the war with the other hand. Justice is on our side,” Netanyahu remarked.

The premier also provided an update on the combined ground, aerial and naval campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, dubbed “Operation Swords of Iron,” which the IDF launched after the Oct. 7 terrorist assault on the northwestern Negev.

“The fighting in the Gaza Strip continues with greater intensity to achieve all its goals—the elimination of Hamas, the return of all our hostages and the promise that Gaza will never again be a threat to Israel,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu on Saturday night praised the United States’s veto of a United Nations Security Council resolution the previous day calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The draft resolution failed to condemn the Hamas massacre of Oct. 7 or acknowledge Israel’s right to self-defense.

“I greatly appreciate the correct stance that the U.S. has taken in the U.N. Security Council,” said Netanyahu.

Thirteen members of 15-strong UNSC voted in favor of the resolution while Britain abstained.

At least 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on Oct. 7. Hamas currently holds 137 men, women, children, soldiers and foreigners captive in Gaza. Some people remain unaccounted for as Israeli authorities continue to identify bodies and search for human remains.

Franklin Graham sends a letter to Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky requesting a ceasefire during the Holy Week.

Rev Franklin Graham said in an interview that he wrote to both presidents asking them for a week of the ceasefire. This is for the celebration of the Holy Week from April 10 through April 24. Although he didn’t expect a response from the Ukrainian and Russian presidents, he thought that this request is needed.

“If they can stop fighting for a week or 10 days, maybe they can stop fighting for two weeks,” Franklin Graham said. “If they stop for two weeks maybe they can stop for a month, if they stop for a month, maybe they can stop for good. You’ve got to start somewhere.”

Ceasefire

Franklin wanted to do something to ignite peace, no matter small and seemingly irrelevant his letter is. He also recently visited Ukraine to check on the war victims. His humanitarian relief organization, the Samaritan’s Purse, is providing aid to refugees and other war victims.

Samaritan’s Purse has set up emergency field hospitals and clinics in the war zone. One of which is located in an underground parking garage in Lviv. The other medical clinics are located at a train station, at a bus station, and in Chernivtsi in southwest Ukraine.

“We have orthopedic doctors, general surgeons, and all the supplies so we want to be closer to where the injured are,” said Graham.

Hamas Continues Nightly Riots On The Border

Despite a ceasefire in May, Hamas continues to stoke the fires of unrest, as “night confusion units” lead nightly riots of hundreds of Palestinians at the Gaza-Israel border. During the day, however, Israel has continued to let in construction materials for rebuilding the war-torn Gaza Strip, as well as expanding the fishing zone off of Gaza and permitting thousands of additional Gazans into Israel to work.

Since Sunday, the nightly riots have been ongoing, with Palestinians throwing explosive devices and rolling fiery tires at IDF soldiers stationed at the border. Also, over the past couple of weeks, a few missiles have been launched out of Gaza, and several incendiary balloons have made their way into southern Israel, setting fields on fire. One Israeli border police officer died after being shot in the head at close range during a protest a couple of weeks ago. Two Palestinians have been killed and dozens injured in the ongoing clashes.

“While people in Gaza lack basic necessities, Hamas uses its resources to incite violence and spread hatred,” the IDF tweeted.

On Tuesday, Israel allowed 165 truckloads of construction materials into Gaza, including cement, steel, and gravel, according to Bassam Ghabin, director of the Palestinian side of the crossing. While the building materials are intended for Gazans to rebuild homes, stores, and other parts of the community, over the years, the supplies have been routinely rerouted by Hamas leadership for the construction of terror tunnels.

IDF Chief Aviv Kohavi said, “Calm and security will allow an improvement in civil conditions, but rioting and terror will lead to a strong response or operation.”

In addition to opening back up the flow of construction supplies into Gaza, Israel expanded the Strip’s fishing zone to 15 nautical miles, the furthest permitted into the Mediterranean Sea since 2007, when Hamas took over. And Israel will allow an additional 5000 Gazans into Israel to work (on top of 2000 already allowed) as long as they are vaccinated or have already had COVID-19. Israel is also sending in more water to Gaza, 1.3 billion gallons. Gaza’s aquifers, which were constructed and maintained by Israel before they turned the area over to Hamas 14 years ago, have deteriorated, and access to water is another daily struggle for Palestinians living under the cruel rule of Hamas.

Official: Israel Approves Egyptian Brokered Ceasefire

The political security cabinet unanimously accepted the recommendation of all security officials, the chief of staff, the head of the Shin Bet, the head of the Mossad, and the head of the National Security Council, to accept the Egyptian initiative for a bilateral ceasefire without any pre-conditions, which will come into effect at a time that is to be determined.

The chief of staff, the military echelon, and the head of the Shin Bet reviewed with the ministers Israel’s great achievements in the war, some of which were unprecedented.

The political echelon emphasizes that the reality on the ground will determine the continuation of the campaign.

IDF Warns Of Full Scale Military Operation In Gaza in Absence Of Ceasefire Deal

The IDF is preparing for the possibility of a full scale military operation in Gaza should efforts to reach a ceasefire deal with Hamas fall through, Army Radio reported Sunday. According to the report, the IDF is prepared for both outcomes, with the estimated chances for either a deal or a conflict at 50/50.

On Friday, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman denied his involvement in any effort to reach a ceasefire, insisting that unless there is some form of progress in terms of the Israeli hostages being held by Hamas, there will be no deal.

“I am not involved with the ceasefire, I don’t believe in the ceasefire,” said Liberman, adding that “we need to bring Hamas to the recognition of the fact that if they want to make any kind of progress, the first issue is the POWs.”

Despite Liberman’s denial, Israel and Hamas have been engaged in a series of talks mediated by Egypt, aimed at reaching a long term ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. On Thursday, the London-based Al-Hayat Arabic language daily reported that a deal between Israel and Hamas is nearly completed, and that it is expected to be announced this week. According to that report, the two sides reached an agreement regarding a prisoner’s exchange, with Israel agreeing to free Palestinians released in the 2011 Gilad Shalit deal, who were taken back into custody in 2014 after Hamas abducted and murdered three Israeli teenagers. In return, Hamas is set set to release the remains of IDF soldiers Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin, who were killed in Gaza in 2014, as well as two Israeli civilians being held by Hamas – Avraham Abera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed.

While Al-Hayat reported that the prisoner exchange will be included in the deal, the Lebanese based Al-Akhbarnewspaper reported Monday, that the talks between the sides were at a standstill following Israel’s insistence on release of the prisoners held by Hamas.

Report: Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Deal Close To Completion

The Egyptian brokered ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas is nearly completed, the London based Al-Hayat Arabic language daily reported Thursday. According to the report, the deal needs a few minor revisions before being finalized, but Egypt has obtained Israel’s agreement and an exchange of documents between the sides is underway.

According to the report, prominent Hamas leader Saleh al Arouri will sign on behalf of Hamas. Once Egypt has obtained his signature in Cairo, an Egyptian delegation will set out for Israel to obtain the Israeli signature and necessary guarantees. After both sides have signed, an announcement will be made to publicize the terms of the agreement and implementation will commence. The deal is set to apply for a period of one year, after which it would be automatically extended for an additional four years.

Al-Hayat also quoted a Palestinian source as saying that the deal is set to include Israel’s lifting of the economic blockade on Gaza, the creation of a maritime route between Cyprus and Gaza, as well as steps to re-open the Yasser Arafat International Airport in the Strip, which ceased operations in 2001, when Israel destroyed it’s runways at the outset of the Al-Aqsa Intifada.
