It seems that writing is Beverly’s first love. At the age of five, she composed lyrics to the “little fingers” piano tunes she learnt. And when she turned nine, she started writing short stories and poetry.
“Reading, writing, and playing piano have been top three on my list of favorite things,” she said.
But her parents could no longer afford to pay for piano lessons, so her mother instead saved every story she wrote, a 77-page long manuscript in total.
Beverly didn’t try to publish her work until her kids were well into middle school. For others it was too late to start a writing career, but now she is known and loved for her Amish books.
“The sales response for my work is astonishing, but even more heartwarming are thousands of letters a year pouring in from readers.” Fans described how her books have “touched a nerve, creating a curiosity about the Old Ways of the Amish… a yearning for a simpler life and return to traditional values in mainstream society, where an impersonal, high-tech lifestyle reigns paramount,” she said.
The portrayal of her characters was so real that people could easily relate to them. The struggles, the victories, the relationships formed along the journey– it’s evident that Beverly knows how to exemplarily bring out the world she sees inside her thoughts into reality.‘I Trust the LORD’
Now, after 30 years, she continues to write that touches the soul.

Throughout her career, which began in 1993 with the release of Holly’s First Love, the first in a 14-book series for pre-teen girls, she has authored more than 100 books for adults and kids. She then wrote a 24-book children’s series called The Cul-de-Sac Kids before publishing The Shunning, the first novel in her 1997 Heritage of Lancaster County series on the Amish, which was followed by The Confession and The Reckoning.
“If God gives me a storyline … then I dive into it,” Beverly told Christian Headlines. “I take it one book at a time. It will be 30 years next April that I’ve been doing this. So I trust the Lord.”
Her life is indeed a living testimony of Proverbs 3:5-6. If we trust the LORD with all our hearts, He will direct our steps.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NLT).
