Tara-Leigh Cobble In Reading The Bible: ‘It’s For You, But It’s Not About You, It’s About God’

Tara-Leigh Cobble talked about her lens in reading the Bible. She learned that the Bible was created for God’s children, but it was not about them, instead, it was about God.

Book author and podcast host of “The Bible Recap,” Tara-Leigh Cobble, joined Allie Beth Stuckey on her show to talk about the Bible. Allie asked her about how her method of reading the Bible changed. She then answered that the first time she read the Bible, her Pastor answered questions along the way. Some people would probably think she felt elated when she finished it. But the truth is, she was heartbroken.

“I read it cover to cover. And believed it was true. All of it, I believe all this is true. All this is God’s word. This is God revealing Himself to us, and I didn’t like Him when I finished,” she admitted. After that, her Pastor gave her a new challenge. He observed the questions she asked and the things that she was looking for. He knew the lens that she was using in reading the scripture.

Reading The Bible

That’s why, her Pastor asked her to read the Bible again and stop looking for herself. Instead, he challenged her to look for God and find out what He loved and hated. He wanted her to discover the things that motivate God to do what He does. She mentioned what her Pastor said, “You’re reading this book like it’s about you. It’s for you but it’s not about you, it’s about God.”

Furthermore, Tara-Leigh Cobble’s testimony reveals a profound shift in her Bible-reading approach. She shares that she is now on her second journey through the scripture, having reached the halfway point of the Old Testament.

“I fell in love. Like I fell in love with the person of God, and it was the lens that I was using to study scripture,” she declared.

Social media has become a popular platform for people to seek encouragement. Many individuals post videos, blogs, and other content to spread positivity and become influencers. However, not all of the positive words shared on social media are genuine. Some of them may make people feel good initially, but they can ultimately lead to destruction.

During a recent episode of her “Relatable” podcast, Allie Beth Stuckey talked about five common myths that some women tend to believe due to what they hear in the culture. She explained that although these phrases might sound good, they are not biblically true.

In a short clip she posted on Instagram, she stated the five myths:

  1. You’re enough
  2. You’re perfect the way that you are.
  3. You get to determine your own truth.
  4. You’re entitled to your dreams.
  5. You can’t love other people until you love yourself.

Self-Sufficiency Leading To Destruction

Allie Beth noted how these words may provide comfort to women today. However, in reality, they are a trap that may eventually lead women to a dead end.

“Because all of those mottos, while they may soothe our insecurities temporarily, make us feel good about ourselves for just a moment, all they do is lead us more into the myth of self-sufficiency,” she explained. “That we are enough for our own happiness, for our satisfaction. All we have to do is to follow our hearts, discover ourselves, chase our dreams, then we’ll finally be happy. We’ll find the fulfillment that we’ve been trying to find. And yet, as I argue in my book, that is a dead end.”

Then, the influencer remarked how humans are “finite” and “fallible,” and God had a reason He designed people in such a way.

“All of the things that we are trying and failing to find inside of ourselves can only be found outside of ourselves namely in our Creator,” she stressed. “And so, when we delude ourselves into thinking that we are the source of our own fulfillment and satisfaction and sufficiency, and all of these things, we actually exhaust ourselves with the responsibility of trying to be our own god. And there only is One, and that is the only God that there is, that is Jesus Christ.”

“Christians are supposed to die to self,” she said. “And actually Scripture said that in the end days, people will be lovers of self.”

She then admitted that she had had her own journey in this area.

“Of wanting to be the solution to my problems, wanting to be enough for myself,” she explained. “Trying to prove that I am self-sufficient, that I didn’t need God. That I didn’t need His rules. And I think that’s what a lot of women are doing today when they’re latching on to kind of the self-love movement.”

Christ Is Our Sufficiency

Allie stressed that as a Christian woman, “trying to be enough” is not the goal. Instead, Christ should be the ultimate goal. And one’s worth should be anchored in Christ alone.

“We’re not enough… because Christ is our sufficiency,” she explained. “If we were enough for our salvation, sanctification, strength, we would not need Christ. But we needed Him so much that He actually died on the cross. A brutal death that He did not deserve because we’re insufficient.”

“Our insufficiency in all things, salvation and otherwise, comes from Christ,” Allie remarked. “And trying to find our sufficiency in ourselves or elsewhere is just going to exhaust us.”

A woman should see herself the way God does!
