Christian singer Ashley Hess emotionally shared the story behind her powerful song “Yet.” She said that it became her lifeline.
Christian Singer Ashley Hess
The Christian singer and songwriter Ashley Hess emotionally shared how God led her to write the song “Yet.” The year before she wrote the song was one of the best years of her life. She experienced so much success, especially in her career, relationships, and personal life. But the following year, she suddenly lost so many things.
“I had been in a serious relationship for almost six years, and that ended. I had lost a relationship with myself. And the hardest and scariest part for me through all of that was feeling like I lost a relationship with God,” she recalled.
That painful season was so terrifying for her. She was someone who would lean into faith, especially in hard moments. But during those times, she couldn’t find hope.
“I felt so ashamed of that. I didn’t understand why all of the things that were so important to me were taken away. And just crumbled like right before my eyes. And I felt like I couldn’t do anything about it,” she explained.
A Sincere Prayer
Furthermore, she shared that she felt like God was upset with her. She was so frustrated, and her heart was filled with shame and guilt until she learned to approach God in sincere prayer. One night, she just kneeled, and the only words that came out of her mouth were, “God, please don’t give up on me. I’m really trying. And I know it’s not much, but I feel like I’m drowning here. I feel so lost and alone.” She broke down and couldn’t formulate thoughts or words.

After that, she sat down and played her piano. There, she wrote three verses of a song in 30 minutes. And the next day, while she was in the car, she wrote the chorus:
“God, I know it makes no sense.
You love me time and time again
But I still need reminding
Yeah, I know it makes no sense”
The Song Was Like A Gift
Finally, she finished the song and first played it at an addiction recovery center. Then, she emphasized, “The feeling in that room was so special. Like the first time that I sing it out to connect with so many people who were trying to pray that same prayer.” The song was like a gift for her, and she felt like she co-wrote it with God.
“The song somehow feels more and more relevant to me as the years have gone by. And I just feel like this song is going to be a Lifeline for the rest of my life. It’s going to be a prayer that I’ll be praying for the rest of my life,” she highlighted.
