A little boy’s simple question to his mom sparked an incredible quest to help homeless people.
Little boy’s simple question
Cyndi Bunch and her son Philip turned their pain into a purpose by launching a movement to help homeless people. It all started when her husband, who suffers from a mental illness, had a mental breakdown and she and her son went out to find him.
“My husband was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and he quit taking his medicine,” she said. “And so he started disappearing.”
As they went out to look for her husband, they saw a sight that broke their heart and ignited a passion in their hearts. They saw many people living on the cold streets of Forth Worth, Texas. Philip was just 5 years old at that time, it was their first time seeing that many homeless people.

One night, after searching for her husband to no avail, she went to her son’s bedroom. As she was saying good night to him, Philip asked Cyndi a series of questions.
“He asked me, ‘Mom, are you warm?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, baby, I’m warm,’” Bunch recalled. “And then he said, ‘Well, do you think daddy’s warm?’”
The surprised mother told her son that she was truly hoping that his dad was warm. He then followed up with another question.
“He goes, ‘Well, mommy, what about all those other people on the street? Are they warm?’” she said. “And … I told him the truth. I said, ‘No, baby, they’re not warm.’”
“Well, we need to get lots and lots of blankets so we can warm ’em all up,” Philip answered.

That moment then started a movement to help those homeless people. The next day, the young boy gave all he has in his piggy bank, which was only $7, to his mom and asked her to buy 5,000 blankets. It was clearly impossible so stood on the streets with notes that asked people for blankets and support for Philip’s efforts.
That simple question from a young boy sparked a great movement. Today, eight years after when they started, they now have given over 50,000 blankets and sleeping bags to those in need. Cindy now also runs a food pantry out of her garage. Her experience shaped her Christian faith.
“He has carried me through so much. If it was not for Jesus Christ and my heavenly Father, I would’ve never made it through this,” she said. “Faith is huge. Faith will carry you. You just have to believe.”
