Actress Shawna Della-Ricca shared on the George Janko Show “what it means to be disciplined with God.”
Legalistic View Of Discipline
On the George Janko Show, Shawna Della-Ricca shared a wisdom she learned from a Christian book she was reading. She read Barbara Hughes’s “Disciplines of a Godly Woman.” The actress explained the difference between how people perceive discipline and God’s perspective on it.
Shawna recognizes the current state of the world, particularly concerning the use of the word “discipline.” Some Christians struggle with this concept as they view it as legalism. Legalism is defined as an excessive adherence to the law that restricts free choice. Unfortunately, some Christians perceive being similarly disciplined with God. However, this is not how God intended it to be.Disciplined With God
Then, the actress pointed out that legalism is significantly different from God’s discipline.
“Legalism is you think that ‘Oh I’m going to read the Bible every single day because then that way, God will love me more,’” she explained. “Discipline is ‘I’m going to read the Bible every day because I love God and I want to please God, and I want to do what’s right by Him.’”
To relieve this burden for Christians, Shawna suggested changing their perspective, emphasizing that it’s the motivation that matters.
“I think that when we hear the idea of like ‘Oh I need to be disciplined’ like learning about God and reading the Scripture,” she said. “We feel like it’s a task that we have to do, and that if you don’t do it, you’ll be in trouble.”
“And if you can change your motivation behind and see it in the way that it’s your heart and it’s your relationship with God, it just changes the idea completely,” she continued. “It becomes something that you want part of your routine. And so, that’s like the discipline with God versus looking at it in a legalistic type of way.”
