Jonny Ardavanis enumerates the seven functions of the Holy Spirit according to the Bible.
The lead pastor at Stone Bridge Bible Church shared the seven functions of the Holy Spirit supported by corresponding Bible verses. Jonny believes knowing the Holy Spirit is essential to a victorious Christian life.
Functions of the Holy Spirit
The first function of the Holy Spirit is to be a primary agent of salvation. Titus 3:5 says, “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit.”
Secondly, the Holy Spirit is the power for the sanctification of the believers. So what is sanctification? “It’s the process by which we become conformed into the image of Jesus Christ,” Jonny said. Romans 15:16 says, “He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.”
Third, Jonny shared that the “Holy Spirit illuminates the Word of God so that believers can understand and apply its truth.”
“What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.” (1 Corinthians 2:12)
The Holy Spirit
Then, the fourth function of the Holy Spirit, according to Ephesians 1:14, is the seal of our inheritance. “It really refers even to our security that if you’re a genuine believer, there is nothing that you could ever do that would cause you to lose your salvation. But your confidence in your security is known as assurance,” Jonny said.
“Fifth, the Holy Spirit testifies within your own soul that you truly belong to God, that He is your Father and that you are His child,” he continued.
“Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,[Father.” (Galatians 4:6)
Then, the sixth function of the Holy Spirit is being an intercessor for the believers in their prayers. “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” (Romans 8:26)
Lastly, the Holy Spirit equips believers to serve (1 Corinthians 12). “The goal of every Christian is that we would live a life that glorifies God by serving Him and other people. And that happens through the power of the Holy Spirit,” Jonny said.
