Christian influencer Quinton Huggett shared with his followers that “it’s not legalism to be disciplined in your relationship with God.”
Discipline is Legalism?
In the Christian context, discipline is sometimes associated with legalism. For some people, legalism is seen as a hindrance to authenticity before God. Some find it acceptable when someone is real with how they feel, which Christians often refer to as being authentic. While being authentic is commendable, it can become excessive when discipline is neglected. People may then become more focused on feelings rather than following the guidance of the Spirit.
Influencer Quinton Huggett addressed the issue in his Instagram post. He explained how some people believe the “terrible lie” that “effort is the opposite of authentic.”As an example, he discussed the discipline of exercising and running. When a person is determined to lose weight and achieve a healthy body image, they have to be disciplined. To reach their goal, the person has to make the effort to exercise even when they don’t feel like it. Just because they don’t feel like it doesn’t mean they no longer love pursuing their goal.
Disciplined In Your Relationship With God
With that said, Quinton remarked, “But what if the act of pushing ourselves to go do the thing when we don’t feel like it is the deepest form of love? I think our walk with God is the same. It’s not legalism to be disciplined in your relationship with Jesus.”
The influencer highlighted that being committed and disciplined in spending time with Jesus on busy days, even when one doesn’t feel like it, is actually a good thing. He said, “It may actually be the deepest sign that your faith is greater than your feelings.”
May Quinton’s message help believers grow more deeply in their relationship with God, realizing that loving God is a choice one must make every day. And that is real love.
