When all his peers were involved in bad things, he was learning about the Bible and worshiping God. He credits the influence in his walk to Chuck Smith, who opened up his church to the hippies back in the 1960s.
“Jesus is the answer. That’s just plain and simple,” he once said.
The Christian musician attributed his love of Christian music and of Jesus Christ to the Jesus Movement. He shared that during that time, he often listened to Maranatha! Music Songs, a ministry founded during the revival by Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel.
He was still a teenager at that time.
Michael W. Smith: His Testimony
“I was like 12 years old—probably 13 or 14—when I first got that first Maranatha record, which was the Everlasting Living Jesus Music Concert—the first Maranatha record that came out of Calvary,” Michael W. Smith said.
But his journey with God was not smooth.

He testified that he had a near-drug overdose in 1978, during which he almost lost his life. And that’s when he asked God, “Lord, do whatever you have to do to get my attention. Car wreck, break my legs, just don’t kill me.”
He continued, “I’d say those kinds of prayers. And I knew my mom and dad were on their knees every single night for me.”
His Parents’ Rebuke
Furthermore, he said, “But I remember on that front porch, I went out there; he asked me to come out there, and I’m sitting. And I just knew it was coming, you know? He just said, “Son, you got to pull it together. You’ve got to stop doing this stuff.”
“And I just remember just going, “I know, dad. I know.” My head was down, and I was trying not to cry, and that’s all I said. “God, here I am. I am nothing without you. And I’m ready; I’m really ready and willing for you to heal me.””
