Pastor Michael Koulianos Explores Why Jesus Remained Silent when Confronted by Pilate Regarding the Meaning of Truth
Michael Koulianos
The pastor of Jesus Image Church delves into the significance of Jesus’ silence in response to Pilate’s inquiry about the nature of truth. He shares this revelation during the church’s Bible study, aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of the Scriptures.
“Have you ever wondered why Jesus chose not to answer Pilate when he asked, ‘What is truth?'” Michael posed the question to the class, referring to the scene depicted in John 18.
“You are a king, then!” exclaimed Pilate. Jesus replied, “You say I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” Pilate’s response was, “What is truth?” He then left Jesus and went back to the Jewish leaders, stating, “I find no basis for a charge against him.” (John 18:37-38)
“He just stood there… He did not provide a ten-point answer,” Michael explained. “Jesus remained silent when Pilate asked, ‘What is truth?'”
Michael continued, “However, it’s not just Jesus, the Healer, standing before Pilate; He embodies the truth. He had already endured the excruciating pain of being flogged.”
“Here we have the suffering Man, fully God, standing in front of Pilate, expressing that He is the truth. By His mere presence in Pilate’s presence, He signifies, ‘I am the truth. This is what truth looks like—the suffering God-man.'”
Michael noted that “nothing the Lord said could have been more powerful than His very being.”
Furthermore, the pastor encouraged the class to respond when asked about the nature of truth. “So, when someone asks you what truth means to you… For the Christian, truth is a Person, revealed through His Holy Word. His name is Jesus.”
