Head Nurse Diagnosed With COVID-19
ICU unit Head Nurse Gary Woodward passed away during the early morning hours Saturday at Ascension Saint Thomas West Hospital in Nashville. He was one of St. Thomas West Hospital’s leaders in the coronavirus unit. According to his wife Jacque, both already knew that they could be positive for the virus.
“We knew that there was a good risk that either one of us could end up testing positive,” she said. “This is the first time he’s ever been in the hospital for an overnight stay, he has no other diagnosis.”
The 64-year-old had no pre-existing medical condition, but the coronavirus was heavily affecting his body.
“Woodward was on a ventilator and undergoing dialysis due to kidney failure,” she said. “This virus has taken a healthy man with no prior medical conditions and impacted every organ in his body.”
Medical Workers Pray
But what’s amazing is that Gary’s colleagues fought in prayer for him while he’s battling the virus. A photo circulating on the internet showed the hospital staff praying together outside of Gary’s hospital room.
“Look at this sea of blue gathered outside of Gary’s room,” Chris Hutchinson, the ICU nurse, said. “For two nights, nurses from all over the hospital have gathered and prayed and placed Gary’s healing in God’s hands!!”
“What an amazing, powerful, humbling experience this is to have all of these nurses, respiratory therapists, NPs, doctors, techs… everyone gathered together in His name!”
According to his obituary, family and friends referred to him as “G-Daddy, GareBear, POD Dad, Woody and Money Man.”
“Gary loved his Calvary Baptist Church family and he loved his POD Nurses’. He loved his family very much,” further said his obituary.
Moreover, it says that he was a “mentor to countless nurses, and other team members with a servant’s heart.” Also, “he provided the best care for his patients and his coworkers.”
