Residents of Kherson, Ukraine, celebrate their freedom from Russia’s occupation of the city for almost nine months. Kherson survivors testify of God’s faithfulness despite it all.
Kherson survivors
A church member said, “He is merciful. He is a good God. He was with us where we were. We saw so many miracles.”
CBN News witnessed up close the joy of the locals as their village was restored to them. Resident Elena said, “Today is the happiest day of my life. I came back home to my dear village.”
Indeed, many who have escaped the war have lived outside Kherson. But, now that the Russian troops are gone, Kherson has seen residents coming back and reuniting with their loved ones.
Survivors shared the terror of living inside the town under Russia. Maria recalled how Russians would kill a person on the spot if he or she claimed to be for Ukraine. Moreover, “they could just come without even asking and take away your car and leave, just like that.”
Another resident, Olga, reported how people kept on disappearing. “They went for water, and they were gone. They went to the market – gone. And they went for medicines – gone.”
“It was scary when I would drive, they could just stop you and kill you,” a Ukrainian man said. “If they don’t like something, they would just kill you, and there were a lot of cases like that.”
The Lord helps
The nine months were truly difficult, but for Kherson Christians, their hope in God remained. “The Lord helped us. Only him. His hand was upon us.”
Rebuilding Kherson may take a long time as there is still no water and power. Food is also running out. But, Christians would come together in their town’s central square to worship God and pray for their city.
A Kherson pastor said, “I can’t even express what I’m feeling. It’s a happiness… and for me, it’s a mountain that was impossible to be moved, but it was moved only by God.”
