Jackie Hill Perry shared her journey of choosing Jesus over her ex-girlfriend, saying that she had left her because she chose Jesus.
Jackie Hill Perry’s Break Up Story
While preaching her sermon, Jackie Hill Perry shared the testimony of how she moved on from her former girlfriend when she was still gay. Apparently, at 20, she started to feel convicted that she had to stop her same-sex relationship after accepting Christ in her life. And because she loved Jesus, she chose to obey and broke up with her girlfriend.

Then, six months from their break up, Jackie recounted how she badly missed the girl because she loved her. Although she did what was right, the hip hop artist admitted that her feelings for her remained. Consequently, she struggled with feelings of sadness and depression after the break up.
“But I left her because I could not love her and Jesus,” she remarked. “I had to choose.”
Encounter With God’s Word
One day, a Christian friend shared some advice for her struggle. She told Jackie that she was tired of looking at her being sad about her ex so, she asked her “to get a piece of paper.”
Then, she told Jackie, “I want you to draw a line down the middle. On one side, I want you to write down everything that you miss about her. Write down the things that only she can give you. On the other side, I want you to write down the Scripture that shows you God can give that to you too.”
Jackie took her friend’s advice and did what she asked and it changed her life forever.
“It’s not soul ties, it’s idolatry,” she concluded after God opened her eyes to the truth. “It’s true, sometimes we’re not missing the person, we’re missing the experience.”
“But the thing that shifted my heart and has literally become which I deal with my own thirst is that on one side I wrote down that she comforted me,” the writer detailed. “She made me feel safe. She made me feel secure. And on the other side, I pulled up the Google because I don’t know the Scriptures like that.. I said Scriptures about God about comfort. And I found 2 Corinthians 1:3 that says ‘all praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, God is our most merciful Father and the Source of all comfort.’”
At that point, Jackie realized that what she had been longing for a long time from other people, she already has because of Jesus.
“I don’t need the water that they have because it won’t quench my thirst anyway,” she remarked. “That’s why I was so desperate for their attention. That’s why I kept calling him, I had to be always around him because they were not eternal. They were not sufficient enough to fill soul, my thirstiness. My thirstiness was an opportunity for me to see Jesus so I can be filled.”
