A woman who was healed from anorexia boldly testified about God’s amazing love and the hope she’s found in Him.
Eating Disorder
Author and worship leader Shell Perris shared her testimony about how God healed her from an eating disorder. Shell grew up being bullied at school. She felt lonely and confused about who she was meant to be.
“It felt like I always had to be somebody that I wasn’t,” Shell recalled. The feeling of isolation got deeper. She thought that she was worthless and unlovable. At the age of 15, Shell made a decision to stop eating. Because of it, her hair was falling out, and she started having a constant headaches.
“I felt trapped. I felt scared this thing that I started off in control of I’d taken control of me,” Shell shared. After that experience, her parents took her to a hospital. The doctor told her she would only have 8 weeks to live if she didn’t start eating again. That’s when she discovered that she was suffering from anorexia.
She started seeing doctors, counselors, and dieticians. “I just didn’t feel like anybody really understood me and what I was feeling. I just felt like I was at the bottom of this deep pit, and there was no way of getting out,” she said.

Healed from Anorexia
Shell felt hopeless not until she met Steve, a youth worker in school. He introduced to her a verse in the Bible about Jesus wanting to share a meal with her. She felt that it was inconsiderate because she had an eating disorder. The bell rang, and as she went to her next class, she couldn’t stop thinking about what Steve said.
Steve eventually invited her to a church, and there, Shell started to change her perspective about God. “I sat on the end of my bed, and I just said, God if you love me … You need to come into my life. Do something about this mess that I’m in because I can’t do it on my own,” Shell cried out. She then felt some warmth flowing through her body. That’s when she realized that she was loved, accepted, and worthy of love. Everything that felt dead in her life started to feel alive again.
“It took two years for me to get to the point where I was totally free. And that’s because of God and the hope and the love that He’s given to me,” Shell testified.
