Alissa Whitson Shares How God Healed Her Incurable Disorder, Restoring Her Dream
Her Story
At the age of 15, Alissa Whitson began experiencing severe back pain. Concerned, her father took her to the doctor, but the diagnosis she received didn’t seem to align with her young age.
“It didn’t make any sense to them because they said they usually don’t see it in people until they’re in their 50s or 60s. But then they were like, ‘Here’s a back brace, here’s some Vicodin, you’ll eventually be in a wheelchair—this is your life,’” Alissa recalled what the doctors told her.
Despite this, Alissa had hope. Growing up, she often watched testimonies on The 700 Club, and she believed healing was possible. However, as the years passed, maintaining hope became increasingly difficult. She eventually had to use a cane and was prescribed stronger medications to manage her pain.
Diagnosed with Incurable Disorder
“I was just trying to figure out how God is good while I’m suffering so much. And why life is so hard when I have to get help from so many people and can’t even take care of myself,” Alissa explained. “When I got to that point of complete hopelessness, I had so many pills from medication after medication. So, when I decided I was done, I just dumped out everything I had and swallowed as many pills as I could.”
In a moment of despair, Alissa attempted to take her own life.

Alissa was still in college at the time, pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher. Her roommate, finding her in distress, rushed her to the hospital, where she survived the overdose. Despite this traumatic event, Alissa persevered and graduated from college. She secured a teaching job, but her condition worsened. Her joints began dislocating, and she had to wear braces on her arms, legs, and even fingers.
Alissa was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder with no known cure. By the age of 35, she faced the hardest decision of her life.
“It was heartbreaking. It was my dream to work with kids, my dream to teach. And when I knew I couldn’t do that anymore, I was so angry at God,” she admitted.
God Healed an Incurable Disorder
But just when she felt most defeated, God intervened.
A friend encouraged Alissa to attend the Seattle Revival Center for prayer. Pastor Richard Gordon from Bethel Church in Redding, California, was leading the service. When Alissa stepped forward for prayer, Pastor Gordon began praying for her.
Alissa hadn’t been able to raise her arms for four years, but after the prayer, not only were her arms healed, but she experienced a profound transformation.
