A Surfer’s Dream
From the moment he gripped his first surfboard at 12, the thrill of surfing captivated him. The ocean was not just a playground; it was where he envisioned his future, aspiring to join the ranks of professional surfers he idolized. These aspirations drew him into a community that, while united by a shared love for the waves, was also steeped in a culture of nightlife, substance abuse, and selfish ambitions.
As he grew older, his immersion in this lifestyle began to take its toll. Relationships frayed and job opportunities dissolved under the weight of his alcohol and drug use. Deep down, he sensed the need for change, a call to something greater, though he couldn’t yet recognize it as God’s voice beckoning him.
A Transactional Faith
Though he had attended church and even served in various capacities growing up, his engagement with faith felt transactional, lacking the personal connection. It was through his wife’s gentle suggestion to try attending church again that a new chapter began to unfold. They found a church where the pastor, a fellow surfer, spoke a language that resonated with him, bridging the familiar world of surfing with the spiritual teachings he yearned to understand.
A Journey of Conviction and Calling
The path to genuine faith was gradual. There were Sundays when he arrived at church, the remnants of the previous night’s escapades still lingering. Yet, each message, each service, chipped away at the walls he had built around his heart. A pivotal moment came during a mission trip to Haiti, where he encountered a woman grappling with despair so profound that she had attempted suicide. As he participated in washing her feet, an act of humble service, he felt an overwhelming connection to God’s love and mercy. It was then that he realized his need for God to be an integral part of his life’s journey.
Surf and Serve: A Mission with Purpose
Embracing his newfound faith, he became involved with Christian Surfers, an organization dedicated to bridging the gap between the surf community and the church. Their “Surf and Serve” missions trips resonated with his dual love for surfing and service, providing a unique platform to share the gospel with fellow surfers. He discovered that the ocean, his place of escape and exhilaration, could also be a sacred space where God speaks.
A Bridge from the Beach to the Church
