When a discouraged pastor questioned the slow growth of their church, God encouraged him in a supernatural way.
Discouraged Pastor Questioned the Church’s Growth
Frankie Mazzapica is the lead pastor of Celebration Church in Woodlands, Texas. But he was discouraged during a time when he and his wife started a church because only three people showed up.
“The only way we could get the word out was to put ads in the newspapers, or we would send mass mailers. We knew we’d only get 1% of the number of emails that we sent out. And so it was just a very discouraging season,” he said.
It didn’t help seeing his friends just start a church and then have a hundred people attend the service. He couldn’t help but ask what he had failed to do.
“Unlike some of my friends, we did not grow by leaps and bounds,” Frankie shared.
Discouraged Pastor Sees Two Angels
Frankie didn’t give up because he remembered having a dream.
“If you have a dream, you don’t even really want to go for it because you feel like the first couple steps are such baby steps, that you don’t even want to go for it. But I want to encourage you to take those small steps. What I’ve learned is that you don’t really know the entire plan that God has for you. The only thing you know is what you’re supposed to do next,” Frankie said.
Still, there were moments when he didn’t want to preach. He recalled a particular time when he said to his wife, “I cannot preach to nine people. I can preach to ten, but I can’t preach to nine.”
After a couple of months, they finally got to ten people, but it stayed that way for many months. Their church was clearly far from how it is now: full of miracles and healings.
“It was a very, very hard season for me. I was very discouraged and I was very down. I thought that maybe he missed God, but I’m too far in to quit by that point,” he said.
The Two Angels
But God always has a peculiar way of encouraging His children. Frankie was encouraged when he saw two angels in his house.

“So I’m sleeping at night, and then all of a sudden, for no reason at all, I just woke up. And when I sat up, I saw two angels standing side by side. They didn’t have wings, they were just dressed in brilliant white clothing. And I’ll never forget; I had the impression that they were always in my house, that they kind of lived there,” he recalled.
Frankie saw the angels looking at the collage of pictures of his family on the wall. He knew instinctively that they were so fascinated with their family and the human families.
Discouraged Pastor was Encouraged by Seeing Angels
He said, “Before God made humans, they had never seen anyone that could reproduce after their kind. Angels don’t have children. And so I realized at that moment that they are fascinated by families. They are fascinated by how human beings serve a God that they can’t see. They have faith in things that they can’t see; they have no tangible evidence. So they’re fascinated by you.
“So, I sat up, and I saw how fascinated they were. Once they realized I could see them, both of them looked at me, smiling. They were so happy, I could see them. When they looked at me, I could tell that they loved me so much. And they were for me. And I didn’t want to stop looking at them. It was like seeing into that world and seeing the angels that are watching over me and watching over us. It was so encouraging to me to realize that we’re never alone. The Lord never leaves us alone,” he concluded.
“No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you” (John 14:18, NLT).
