Jennifer Zimmerman shared how she struggled with decades of shame due to what her abusers did to her. But that changed when she met God while going through a radiation tunnel.
Her Story
During her freshman year in college, Jennifer went to a friend’s apartment. Not because of a party or anything like that. She was simply invited by a trusted friend. Little did she know that her life would completely change after that.
“There were a couple other girls in the apartment, I remember that, and maybe some of his roommates,” Jennifer recalled. “The next thing, I remember waking up in a bed, and I said, ‘I don’t feel good. Something doesn’t feel right. I need help.’ I couldn’t see faces, I could just see silhouettes of bodies. And it wouldn’t take long for me to understand what was happening.”

Jennifer moved back home after leaving the university due to threats from the men. She later found out she was pregnant.
Decades Of Shame
Desperate, Jennifer went to an abortion clinic. She couldn’t bear to have the baby. She was determined, but something stopped her from going through the doors. Jennifer decided to keep the baby. She married in 1998 after a few years of dating. She and her spouse have three children. Later, she desired to start attending church to find healing. However, her emotionally abusive spouse forbade her from going.

Then in 2015, Jennifer was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She was told she had only one year left to live. This was the moment when Jennifer became so desperate to go to church that her husband couldn’t stop her. Jennifer pursued God even while receiving her cancer treatments. She adds that it was during this time that she encountered Jesus in a surprising place.
When Decades Of Shame Meet God’s Unconditional Love
“I met Jesus at a radiation tunnel. The radiation is so intense that if it would hit any other organ in my body, it would destroy it. I had to be so still and it was in that stillness that I met Jesus truly in that radiation tunnel. I felt his presence,” she said.
Right there and then, she was set free. With her newfound faith, Jennifer became passionate about sharing the love of God. Eventually, Jennifer and her spouse got divorced. Her cancer responded well to treatment, and she is currently in complete remission.
“Cancer saved my life,” she said. “It gave me permission to boldly chase Him. There’s so much beauty, and so much promise, and so much love, and peace– everything has changed. My world is brighter.”
Jennifer has since founded a ministry that helps women who are victims of domestic abuse.
