Classmates celebrate with a 6-year-old boy who recently underwent final chemotherapy and defeats leukemia.
Classmates celebrate last chemotherapy
On November 1, 2016, John Oliver Zippay, also known as J.O., was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Since his diagnosis, he has was in and out of the hospital, undergoing chemotherapy.

John and Megan Zippay, John’s parents, said that these past three years were never easy. In addition to the medical procedures John has had to endure, he was also robbed of living the life of a normal child because of his a device in his heart.
“He had a meta-port in his chest so he wasn’t able to do any physical activity for three years. So it was hard for him, had to sit back for gym class and things,” his parents said.
Despite his condition, Oliver was still successful in his academics.
“Him having to miss some of the time was tough, but the class was just so happy to see him come back,” Principal Patrick Gannon said.
Beats leukemia
On January 8, as John ended his three-year-long battle with cancer, his classmates, teachers, and family organized a celebration.
“He loves planes, he’s kind of an old soul, he loves WWII and all that kind of stuff so he’s really excited to be able to travel a bit more and do that kind of stuff,” a family friend and celebration organizer Shannon Formanski said.
A video montage of Oliver’s brave battle with leukemia was highlighted during the celebration. Everyone was in tears as they welcome the young boy into his new life.
“You want that for your child, to grow up and get dirty and play outside and have fun and we kept him in a bubble so we’re excited. Looking forward to the future and having our little boy back,” Megan Zippay said.
