Christian coach Dr. Sherri Yoder encourages believers to speak Scriptures out loud. She shared how it changed her perspective and hopes to build others up with her experience.
Start Speaking Scriptures Aloud
According to Dr. Sherri, her feelings usually overwhelm her. She lets her feelings of doubt, fear, anger, and exasperation grow and take over at times. And more often, her cries to God consists on what she feels than what is found in the Bible.
“God patiently taught me through gentle whispers that came from reading His Word every day that I was amplifying my pain by declaring it aloud to Him over and over and over,” she said.
She referenced to King David, whose prayers are often cries to God. “He always, every time, returned to the truth of God’s word. And by the end of his prayers, he was instead declaring God’s majesty and character,” Sherri explained.
Change In Focus
And so, Sherri did the same. In her lowest moment, she prayed Scriptures instead. She declared God’s goodness and mercy. Immediately, her focus shifted from her feelings to God’s majestic goodness.
“Eventually, God started to shift the way I felt because I was looking more for who He was than how He could help me I feel how I felt,” she shared.
“I stopped feeling overwhelmed all the time.
I stopped feeling unseen.
I stopped feeling angry.
I stopped feeling defeated.
I started feeling secure.
I started feeling held.
I started feeling lifted.
I started feeling expectant and hopeful.”
“It wasn’t a one-time fix. But it became a choice I kept making in every moment I was tempted to keep my eyes on the way I felt,” Sherri added.
In the same way, she encourages believers to make the more excellent choice whenever they are faced with the same situation. “That’s what God wants for you. Freedom from suffocating feelings and rest in the truth of who God is – THAT is the abundant life Jesus promised.”
