Christian apologist, Dr. Frank Turek, answers the question, “Is it a sin to not follow the Great Commission?”

Some believe that as long as you attend church, give to the poor, and live peacefully among the community, you are not committing any offense against God. But we should not overlook Jesus’ command to His followers – to go and make disciples.
And so, one participant in one of Frank’s conferences asked the minister if it is okay to not follow Jesus’ command. He asked, “Is it a sin to not create disciples?”

Frank answered, “Well, anything that we’re not doing that Jesus told us to do would be a sin. Right?”
He added, “There are sins of commission, where you say, commit adultery, or you know, steal something. And then, there are sins of omission, when God tells you to make disciples and you have zero to do with that.”
Follow the Great Commission
He referred to James 4:17 to prove the sin of omission.
“In fact,” Frank continued. “James talks about this. If you know what the right thing is and you don’t do it, that would be a sin of omission.”
However, Dr. Frank clarified that making disciples, following the Great Commission, doesn’t necessarily look like going out and preaching the Gospel. It can be done with just leading people to believe in Jesus.
He said, “You’re actually making a disciple when you’re just, someone’s not a Christian, but you’re moving them toward Jesus. Right? You’re just getting them to believe that truth exists.”
Frank revealed that one of the problems with evangelism today “is that people think they have to get everyone to the foot of the Cross with every conversation.”
“If you think that you’ll never do it, and it’s not realistic, that might happen every now and then. But you just want to move people toward Jesus one step at a time.”
