Ramón Ayala, popularly known by his stage name “Daddy Yankee,” gained worldwide fame in 2004 with his hit song “Gasolina.” Since then, he has made a name in the reggaeton industry. In 2017, he was featured in another hit single, “Despacito” which has been ranked number one on the Hot Latin Songs chart.
On December 3, he surprised everyone with his statement on his farewell concert tour at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico with an audience of over 18,000. He revealed that after winning all those awards and gaining worldwide fame, he had to say goodbye to reggaeton to devote his life to Christ.
“My people, this day for me is the most important day of my life. And I want to share it with you because living a life of success is not the same as living a life with purpose,” he testified.”…I have to confess that those days are over. Someone was able to fill that emptiness… That is why tonight, I recognize, and I am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Jesus lives in me and that I will live for him.”

He also announced that he would journey in this new beginning as Ramón Ayala, his birth name. He also said that everything in his possession will now be used for the Kingdom of God.
“All the tools that I have in my possession such as music, social networks, platforms, a microphone — everything that Jesus gave me — is now for His kingdom,” he said. “Thank you very much, Puerto Rico, and I hope that you walk with me in this new beginning.”
Ramón quoted Matthew 16: 26-27 during his speech and on his Instagram post, saying “For what good is it for a man to gain the whole world if he loses his life?” He then ended his statement by inviting everyone to also follow Jesus Christ.
“To all the people who followed me, follow Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life,” he added. “Just like Jesus, with his mercy, allowed me to travel the world, in your mercy, Father, I hope you allow me to evangelize the world from Puerto Rico. Amen.”
