Bible scholar Chad Bird explores God’s desire for His children and the careers they will pursue.
What Career Should You Pursue?
Many Christians are concerned with the directions they take and what career paths to choose. Often, they pray hard and fast for God’s guidance and answer. But Chad Bird believes that God does not have an “ideal vocation” planned for each person.
He said, “There is no ‘ideal vocation’ that God has planned for you. Be a janitor or jeweler. Be a politician or plumber, a pastor or welder. In the big picture, it does not matter.”
Moreover, Chad claimed that God is not worried if Christians choose a “wrong career.” Unless it is a sinful job, God is not disappointed.
“God is not worried about you choosing ‘the wrong career,'” he said. “Sure, pray for guidance. Discern your unique gifts. Seek the advice of others. But, when you finally make a decision, don’t imagine that heaven has been waiting on pins and needles, hoping you’ll make the ‘right one’ and disappointed if you make the ‘wrong one.'”
Seek First
1 Corinthians 7:17 says, “Let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him.” According to Chad, the passage is Paul’s version of the saying, “Bloom where you are planted.”
So, what does God really want you to do?
Chad answers, “He cares that we seek first his kingdom and his righteousness. If we are doing that as farmers, soldiers, or painters, then we are in the vocation where the Father will be at work in our lives to use us to love and serve those in our midst.”
“In Christ, you are free. Whichever career you choose, Jesus will be changing diapers or teaching, programming or preaching, right alongside you, in you and through you, rejoicing daily over you, his brothers and sisters.”
Chad concluded that living as a Christian is living freely in the life that Jesus gave.
