Hospital staff sets-up a dream wedding for a cancer patient within just three days during the pandemic.
Cancer patient
22-year-old Samantha Preston was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. In August 2019, she started her cancer treatment at Banner Children’s Hospital at Desert in Mesa. There, she received chemotherapy to fight the cancer.
Despite her medical condition, Samantha remained positive as much as she can. She even got engaged to her loving partner Angel Aguilar.

Today, she is continuing her cancer treatments at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale. Little did she knew that the staff in that hospital would do something that she would never forget all her life.
Samantha’s medical team saw how much support she received from her fiancée. While admiring their engagement ring, the hospital staff got an idea to set-up the cancer patient’s dream wedding.
“I said, ‘You’re coming in for a long day of transfusions on Friday. Why don’t you let us throw the wedding here at the clinic?’” said Amy Mabry, a nurse practitioner at the pediatric oncology center at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center. “She kind of got a sparkle in her eye, and she said, ‘Really?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, we’ll totally figure it out for you.”
Wedding at the hospital
Within just three days, the hospital staff turned to wedding planners to set-up a ceremony hall in the hospital area where families usually gather.
“They just completely went all out with the decorations, and they had it all planned where they would cover up my (IV) pole, hiding the transfusion going on. It was just so magical!” said Samantha. “And I told them if they wouldn’t have done what they did, I would have just gone out for dinner after getting the papers from the courthouse.”
Remarkable day
Samantha was very thankful for what her medical team has done for her. It was truly a day she would never forget.
“I just always wanted to remember to overcome adversity with a positive attitude, because that’s what’s going to get you through it the easiest,” she said. “You know, everybody has their problems, no matter what it is. Yes, I’m going through cancer, but there are other families now going through COVID. There are families who have been going through cancer or other issues for way longer than I have. And you just need to remember, always stay positive no matter what situation or obstacles you have to go through.”
