Amber Guyger, former Dallas police officer was charged to 10 years in prison for walking into Botham Jean, an innocent man’s home, shooting and killing him.
The former officer allegedly walked into the wrong apartment this past Tuesday, mistaking it for her own. When she noticed a man in “her home” she pulled out her gun and killed him. However, Botham Jean was simply sitting on his couch eating ice cream in his own home.
Many are shocked and angry with the situation as this continues to be a conversation and problem in the United States.
“I forgive you”
However, the world was in shock yesterday as Botham’s 18-year-old brother, Brandt Jean, took the stand and forgave Guyger. He spoke about the love of Christ, and how he doesn’t wish for her to be punished, but to come to accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior.
“I love you as a person and I don’t wish anything bad on you”
Brandt then asked the judge is he could give her a hug. The judge allowed it and the two embraced for almost an entire minute in the middle of the courtroom.
The second shock of the hearing came when “…the emotional trial wrapped up, Judge Tammy Kemp walked over in her black robe to give Guyger a Bible. Then, she wrapped her arms around Guyger and murmured to her. Together, they prayed.”
It’s an overwhelming mix of emotions. While such a horrendous act was committed, there also stands the opportunity for reconciliation. In an unpredictable world, this was the last thing anyone would expect to come of this court hearing.
God lives in you and in me. We all have this same amount of strength and righteousness to move forward in power and love. Let this resonate in your heart – that as we work to create a more beautiful world, we must hold in balance our pain and our greater purpose.
Move forward with purpose.
