New York Times Bestselling author, Karen Kingsbury, shares how she found Christ by once trying to cancel her boyfriend’s Christian faith.

Christian author and number one New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury shared her faith journey to “The Prodigal Stories Podcast.” Apparently, she grew up in a “great family.” But they were not believers of Christ. They didn’t attend church or read the Bible.

“We didn’t really go to church very often,” she said. “I’d never opened a bible, did not have a relationship with Jesus.”

Then one day, when Karen became a young adult, she decided to work out in a gym. There, she met Don Russell, who got her attention because “he was a clean-cut guy who didn’t party.” His life made her curious because he wasn’t like the usual guys she met.

The two dated, but Karen was speechless when Don asked her if they could do a Bible study on their date.

“[He said, ‘I] was wondering if I could please bring a Bible to our date … we could like read the Bible first,'” she recalled. “And, I mean, honestly I thought, ‘That’s the craziest thing I’d ever heard.'”

Threw The Bible On The Ground

The author didn’t have a choice but reluctantly listened to Don’s preaching every time. But a few months later, she got tired of listening to the spiritual conversations. Which her boyfriend kept trying to share with her.

“I was like, really, this is just exhausting … I felt uneasy,” she said. “After three months, we had this big fight about it.”

Karen could barely hold her exhaustion that she just threw Don’s Bible on the ground one day.

“And … the binding actually split … we just kind of both were frozen,” she detailed.

Encountering God’s Word

Don picked up the torn Bible and drove off. However, Karen didn’t want to stop there. She wanted to prove to him that “her way of living was just as good as Russell’s biblically-minded existence.”

“I thought, ‘You know, I’m going to prove to him that my man-made ways of thinking … my way of life was … the right way,” she explained. “So, I thought, ‘I need to go get a Bible so I can argue with him and debate this. I need to understand what it is.'”

So, Karen bought a Bible and studied it. But she was shocked that the Scripture began to speak straight to her heart.

“And I could hear God say, ‘Karen, you have a choice,” she recalled. “This is a crossroads in your life. You can either hold onto your man-made ways, and you can fall apart with them. Or you can grab onto My word and never let go.'”

Since then, the Christian author was never the same again. And today, she has been married to Don for 35 years, and “Jesus is everything” to their family.

“And our life and our worldview and our storytelling and everything we do is anchored on His Word,” Karen remarked.
