One of the top women’s basketball coaches shared her testimony of how God intervened when she lost all hope and contemplated ending her life with a gun.
Pursuing The Basketball Dream
Tomekia Reed grew up in a Christian household, with her father serving as a minister. Hailing from a tight-knit family renowned for their competitiveness on the basketball court, she thrived as an athlete. Her senior year brimmed with excitement as she received a college scholarship offer from a University. However, her hopes and dreams were shattered by a tragic event – her mother’s passing from cancer.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Tomekia graduated from college and pursued her lifelong aspiration of becoming a basketball coach. She began as an assistant coach at Jackson State University at the age of 25. However, the following year, devastating news struck as her brother fell victim to a robbery at his home, leaving Tomekia shattered as he had been her primary supporter.

God’s Intervention
After some time, Tomekia left her job and relocated to a nearby university. She became a mother and found herself without her partner’s support. Turning to her father for assistance, she became dependent on him as she persisted in pursuing her dreams.
‘THE DEVIL CAN’T HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS BUT HE CAN HEAR YOUR WORDS’
In 2017, Tomekia accomplished her goal of becoming the head coach of Jackson State. Her father, who had been supportive and proud, was there to witness her success. Unfortunately, just three months after her promotion, he passed away. Losing her primary source of motivation, Tomekia felt lost and without purpose. Her father had been the driving force behind her dreams, and his absence left her feeling empty.
One day, amidst overwhelming sadness and grief, Tomekia contemplated ending her life. She prayed to God, seeking relief from her pain before taking any drastic actions. Just as she was about to reach for her gun, her son entered the room.
Tomekia viewed this moment as a sign from God and embraced her son, allowing God’s peace and understanding to envelop her that day.
