A Christian host and reporter went out to Asbury and interviewed students and staff about the day the revival started.
Asbury Students and Staff
All interviewees had the same answer when asked about the day the outpouring or revival started. They all described it as “an ordinary and mundane routine of chapel service.” But, something made the students stay – the work of the Holy Spirit.
Andrew, an Asbury student, said it was a mystery. “It was a really good chapel.” He added, “We were particularly praying for, I guess, kind of hypocritical love that a lot of people in our community had felt… There’s no words to really describe to actions of the Spirit. That is something, a mystery to us.”
Meanwhile, a professor described the day as “chill.” She said that the students hung back after chapel because they felt the Holy Spirit telling them to stay there, and so they did. The Gospel Choir was playing at the time. “It was just real chill,” she said. “Our chapel services are pretty chill. It’s not highly produced.” But the students kept being drawn in and eventually the president recognized something was happening in Hughes Auditorium and invited everyone to join.
Another professor recalled some of his students’ hunger. He shared that four students suddenly barged in when he had class and told everyone, “God is moving inside Hughes Auditorium.” The students’ conviction moved the professor that he dismissed his class early. He shared, “I literally had students getting up from their chairs and running to Hughes Auditorium. And gather with their fellow students to worship and pray in the most unplugged, raw way.”
“The more I stayed, the more I could tell this wasn’t an emotional high,” a student said, referring to the first day of the outpouring. “It has motivated Christians, especially Gen Z’s, to remember what truth is and to reignite our faith.”
