The disciples had seen Jesus walking on water on the Sea of Galilee, and whilst they were on the boat, Peter, a follower of Jesus characterised by his faith and perhaps courage, says to Jesus: “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
And Jesus says, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:28-31)
For as long as Peter’s focus was on Jesus, he was able to step out of the boat and walk on water! Doing what was seemingly impossible.

But when Peter saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink…
Peter became overwhelmed by the conditions of his environment and began to sink. Often times, when our focus is in he wrong place, or we get too caught up in the wind (what is happening around us!), we begin to sink. Sink into fear, rejection, hopelessness, joylessness and feeling overburdened.
Jesus calling Peter to ‘Come’ was a call to come into a place of trusting God.
For every circumstance, Jesus reminds us to come back to a place of trusting Him. He invites us to re-align our focus on Him, our power source, that we may be able to overcome the impossible and do great things in His name.
Even when Peter began to sink, Jesus immediately responded by taking hold of him! Rest knowing that our God can be trusted!
