After suffering cardiac arrest, a 16-year-old was pronounced dead. But his mother started praying, and everyone was shocked at what happened.
16-Year-Old Was Pronounced Dead
Sammy Berko of Missouri City, Texas was pronounced dead after hours of frantic attempts to revive his lifeless heart.
“He climbed to the top of the wall, rang the bell, as we were told, and then his body went limp, and it looked like he was either playing around or passed out. They weren’t quite sure and when they realized he was unresponsive, they lowered him slowly,” said Sammy’s mother, Jennifer.

They would soon learn that Sammy had suffered cardiac arrest. CPR was given for two hours by gym employees, paramedics, and doctors. The 16-year-old was pronounced dead.
“They looked at us and said, ‘I’m so sorry, but he’s gone,'” says an emotional Jennifer.
His Mother Started Praying
Doctors left his grieving parents to say goodbye, but minutes later something unexpected happened.
“I started talking to him, just telling him how much I love him and sorry that we didn’t know how to save him. Suddenly, as I started praying, my husband said, ‘oh my gosh, he’s moving,'” exclaims Jennifer.

It was a miracle! Sammy survived and overcame death. When the couple began shouting that he was alive, the medical staff hurried back in.
“These are professionals who have been doing this their entire lives, who have seen the worst of the worst. Each and every one of them afterward came to us and said that they have never seen anything like this before. Ever. Never had they ever pronounced somebody and suddenly they came back five minutes later. That feeling of seeing his heartbeat, there are no words for that. There are no words. We just stood there. I mean, grateful is the biggest understatement ever to know that he might make it,” Jennifer explained.
16-Year-Old Pronounced Dead, But is Now Recovering
Everyone anticipated Sammy would suffer severe brain injury because he went for such a long time without oxygen to his brain. However, he only experienced temporary memory loss. Although it has gotten better, it was initially very difficult for his family to tell Sammy what happened and experience his reaction to it.
“I don’t remember anything about the day it happened. The last thing I remember is the night before we had to sign waivers online (for the rock climbing gym), and then I woke up, not even in the pediatric ICU. I woke up in the transitional ICU and that’s the first thing I remember. Then I remember my dad telling me, this is what happened and you better remember this time, because he said it so many times,” laughs Sammy.
“We do see kids all the time here who have had CPR, but with very prolonged CPR, we typically see very severe global anoxic brain injury, so to me, he is a literal miracle,” said Sammy’s doctor, Dr. Hall.
